Faith Formation Program Descriptions

Sunday School (PreK-K)
Our Sunday School is for ages 3, 4, 5 and Kindergarten.  Each week we have a lesson, prayer time, activities and play.  Children learn about Jesus, how much He loves them and have fun! Classes meet during the 8:30am and 10:30am Sunday Masses.

Sunday School Volunteers:
We are looking for Sunday School Catechists. This is an opportunity for you to have your own class of 3-4 year olds, 4-5 year olds, or Kindergarten students. High School sophomores, juniors and seniors may also volunteer. This is a 24-week commitment. If you would like more information, please contact Kathy.Neary@stjosephcommunity.org, Sunday School Coordinator, for more information.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (Levels 1 & 2)
Our Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program is for children started at age 3 (by 9/1/18).  This is a Montessori based Catholic faith formation program where children can grow in the their relationship with God and fall in love with the Good Shepherd. This year we are offering Level 1 (ages 3-6) and Level 2 (ages 6-9).  Level 1 is offered on Sundays at 8:15am and 10:15am. Level 2 is offered on Wednesday evenings.
We will be accepting children on a first come first serve basis. For more information about this program, contact Kathy.Neary@stjosephcommunity.org.

Additionally, the program will continue to be offered to all enrolled St. Joseph Faithful Beginnings Pre-school as well as piloted with the Kindergartners as a part of their school week. For more information about St. Joseph Catholic School, click here

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Volunteers:
We are looking for certified catechists for Level 1 & 2 (must have been trained in one or both of those levels). If you are interested in taking training to become a catechist for this program or would like more information, contact Kathy.Neary@stjosephcommunity.org.

Be My Disciples (Grades 1-5)
This program is designed for Elementary aged children in grades 1-5. It is a balanced approach to children's faith formation. Lessons are presented alongside the liturgical calendar and supplemental materials are also provided so lessons can be reinforced at home in the family. The program meets 2 Wednesdays a month from 6:00pm - 7:15pm.

Elementary Grade Volunteers
Volunteers are needed to walk with our little ones in grades 1-5. Catechists (small group leader) are needed as well as room assistants (extra helping hands to the catechist), and hall monitors. If you enjoy working with this age group - we will find a good fit for your talents.

Encounter (Grades 6-7*)
Encounter is a Catholic Bible study designed specifically for middle school youth. Through large group presentations and small group discussions, youth are drawn into the story and come to a new and deeper understanding of who God is. Click here to learn more about Encounter and view sample clips of the program. Middle school youth meet 2 Wednesdays a month from 7:00pm - 8:30pm.

*Encounter will be offered to just 6th graders starting in 2019-2020.

Middle School Volunteers:
Volunteers are needed to serve as small group leaders for our youth in middle school. If you are a first timer to volunteering, this might be a great spot to start. The Middle School programs are a DVD presentation style - so they do most of the teaching! As a small group leader you are provided resources, small group discussion questions, and activities to help walk with the youth. Little preparation is required on your part!

Altaration (Grade 8*)
Altaration helps youth appreciate and understand the beauty and mystery of the Mass. The program is designed to stir thought and discussion through dynamic presentations and small group conversations. Click here to learn more about Altaration and view sample clips of the program.
Middle school youth meet 2 Wednesdays a month from 7:00pm - 8:30pm.

*Altaration will be offered to 7th & 8th graders in 2019-2020.
*Altaration will be offered only to 7th graders starting in 2020-2021.
(Stay tuned for a new 8th Grade Program to be released in 2020-2021!)

Youth EXPO (Grades 9-12)
The Youth EXPO stands for Experiencing Christ Positively through Others. Youth gather on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month from 6:00pm - 7:30pm and encounter their faith through guest speakers, music, activities, and each other. Over the 4 years, EXPO walks through the 4 Pillars of the Church: Creed, Sacraments, Moral Life, and Prayer.

High School Volunteers
Our biggest need for volunteers is to be a small group leader. Materials and supplies are provided. Also, if you are interested in being a guest speaker one of the evenings, please contact Mijanou.Sampers@stjosephcommunity.org to inquire.

Sacramental Preparation / Formation
Please click on the links to the left to learn more about Sacramental preparation for First Sacraments (Reconciliation & Eucharist) and Confirmation. Questions regarding Sacramental preparation can be directed to Kayla.Rooney@stjosephcommunity.org.

For the safety and well being of our youth participants, all volunteers with the Faith Formation program must be in compliance with St. Joseph and the Archdiocese's Essential 3 Components: Background Check, Code of Conduct, and Safe Environment Training (VIRTUS). Contact the Parish Office for more information.
